Configuring the facet display for a search profile
You can configure the “facets” (or categories) that display in Searching for a specific search profile. Facets let patrons narrow their initial search results by limiting the search results to a subset of items. By default, the software delivers a set of predefined facets including Author, Format, Item Category 1, Item Category 2, Material Type, Keywords, Language, Library, Shelf Location, Publication Date, and Subject.
For each facet, the software might display a list of options (or “navigators”) that are specific to the patron’s search results. For example, if you entered “children’s books” as your search terms, the software would display the Author facet, under which you might see options such as “Dr. Seuss,” “A. A. Milne,” or “Beatrix Potter.” Patrons can refine their search results based on the facets and navigators that are available in Searching for each search profile. You can add or remove which facets display in Searching and the order in which they appear to patrons, enter the name that will display in Searching, and configure which navigators can display for a facet.

If you try to configure the facet display or delete the profile at the same time as another administrative user, the software displays an error message indicating that the search profile record has been updated or deleted by another user, and prevents you from saving any changes that you may have made to the profile. To continue making changes to this search profile, choose Cancel to reload the data and, if the profile is still available, re-enter your changes. |
If you remove a specific facet from a search profile while a patron is using that facet in Searching, the software removes that facet from the Narrow your results sidebar in Searching when the search results are refreshed. The software then redisplays the patron’s search results without applying the facet that you have just deleted to the search results.

The Discovery administrator database metadata is cached in the Discovery Server application. Any changes to profiles will not be reflected in Searching until the metadata cache is refreshed. For more information, see Refreshing the search cache. |
